Fyffe & Brent, co-proprietors of Old Cuss Cafe, a new entirely plant-based cafe located in South Salt Lake.

Fyffe & Brent, the co-proprietors of Old Cuss Cafe, started their business as a beautiful custom-built food trailer in the summer of 2020. Unfortunately, in March 2021, Brent hit some black ice while towing their trailer, causing an accident that left the trailer totaled. At the time, they thought this might be the end of the road for the business. But with tremendous determination and community support, they were able to rebuild their business better than ever. Now, Old Cuss is a brick-and-mortar cafe, which opened in South Salt Lake in December 2021.

As the name suggests, Old Cuss Coffee Co. has amazing coffee & espresso beverages. But if you make a trip to Old Cuss, don’t sleep on the food. Brent recently moved to Salt Lake City from Kansas City, and he brought with him a passion for properly prepared KC BBQ food, made without any animal products. The resulting KC Jack BBQ sandwich is absolutely delicious. Other great options on the menu include a “Sloppy Joseph” sandwich and a smoked tofu BLT. The entire menu is free of animal products.

Both the aesthetics as well as the ethics of Old Cuss are commendable. Fyffe and Brent built almost the entire interior of the restaurant from scrap materials that were heading for the landfill, and adorned the entire cafe with vintage antiques that create a relaxed & rustic vibe. The owners have a deep concern for the environment, and this is what motivated them to ensure their menu was free of animal products and their interior design made use of repurposed materials, as much as possible.

In addition to the excellent food & beverages, Old Cuss is home to a curated vintage market, with different shelves reserved for different local retailers borrowing space in the cafe to make their items available for purchase. On the shelves of Old Cuss, you’ll find clothing, art, pottery, books, food, and other goods offered by one of several local artists and retailers like Lavender Luck, Sticks and Bones, and Olive & Oak.

The stock of available items represent a wide range of local businesses, including many packaged food items that local vegans will likely recognize, including Sweet Hazel, Blatch’s BBQ, Salsa Del Diablo, and more. Brent expresses an attitude of collaboration with other local businesses, wanting each to empower and enable the other’s success. “Utah is not our competition,” Williams said. “It’s about making each other better, and not bringing each other down,” he told The Salt Lake Tribune.
